Meet Our Team: Michael
Meet Our Team: Michael
Michael is the heart of the accounting department. He keeps everything running smoothly. Even in stressful situations, he always has a joke or a smile.
What responsibilities does accounting fulfill?
A little bit of everything. We are the Guardians of Douglas Equipment’s money, so we have to be vigilant and double-check all vendor invoices, customer invoices, utilities, bank accounts, and credit cards. We have to make sure everything runs smoothly, and if there is anything that pops up that is a problem, we have to quickly figure it out and resolve the issue. We also coordinate with all of the other departments and work in harmony with them to push the company forward.
What is your role in the accounting department?
I reconcile the bank accounts and credit cards. I am responsible for the weekly financials. If any issues arise, I try to help fix them. We all work in the same room, so we work closely with each other and support each other. We have the best accounting team so they make it easy to be me.
What do you enjoy most about the job? / What is the most rewarding part?
The people I work with are the best! If it wasn’t for them, it would just be some random office job. They make it more than that.
What were you doing before you came to work for Douglas Equipment?
I got my degree in Accounting originally. I then taught for a few years and decided not to do that anymore. I wasn’t exactly sure what I wanted to do, and then I found a position here and it stuck.
How many years have you worked here?
Almost 6 years, I started Jan. 3, 2017.
What would you consider the most important thing you’ve learned between now and then?
There are so many things I have learned working here. It has changed so much since I started. I have grown a lot. Our son was born in February 2017, so new job, new baby, it was quite a year. I guess the biggest lesson (still ongoing) is about priorities. You have to figure out what’s important and put that first.
The accounting department has more than doubled since I began working here. What is the most substantial area of growth for the department?
The sales have skyrocketed since I first started here. We have implemented a new accounting system since then, which wasn’t exactly a walk in the park to learn. We have had a lot of obstacles to overcome as a department, and as a company as a whole. I feel like we have refined our processes and we have become much more efficient. We are always looking for ways to do things better.
As stated in the question, the department has more than doubled in size. It’s not easy to find a couple of people that work well together, and it’s even harder to find a group of seven that work well together. Six out of the seven people have been here for at least a year and a half, so we have been very fortunate in finding smart people that work well together. We also have high hopes for the new person. She has excelled in her job responsibilities and she has meshed well with the other team members!
What changes have you noticed in the foodservice industry over your time with us?
The uncertainty of lead times, delivery dates, etc. have definitely been a challenge. The supply chain issues have definitely made everything more difficult. We had to increase inventory to have items to sell because you never knew when the vendor was going to have them back in stock. With everything that has happened the past couple of years around the world, coordinating orders with vendors and customers has become even more important. You definitely have to have increased attention to detail.
Do you have any predictions for the future of the foodservice industry or our company?
The good news for our industry and Douglas Equipment is that everybody has to eat. There’s always going to be a need for foodservice equipment. So, at least there is job security in our industry.
What’s something you do for fun?
My son is 5, so one thing we have recently found a lot of entertainment in is building Lego sets. He is actually becoming quite helpful, instead of just watching me do it, so we have a lot of fun building those together!
Thank you, Michael, for taking the time to participate in our interview series!
