Starting a new business can be a huge undertaking. To help, we’d like to give you a few tips and tricks specific to starting a pet bakery.

While these principles apply to any business model, our love and affection for dogs inspired us to choose this topic. If you explore our social pages you can find previous photos of some of the e-commerce department’s furry friends.

Before beginning any new adventure, it’s a good idea to sit down and plot your course. Tip #1 is:

1) Have a Plan

Knowing the destination you desire and having a step-by-step action plan to get there will greatly increase your chances of success. Part of the planning stage requires you to discover:

  • What Type of Business Model Works Best for You
  • How Much Initial and Continuing Costs Will Be
  • Who You Will Target Your Products To
  • Why Your Market Should Purchase from You and Not the Competition
  • How Much You Will Charge
  • Where Will Your Business Be Located
  • When Will Your Operation Be Open
  • What Will You Name Your Business

Discovering the answers to these inquiries will take time. TRUiC discusses these steps in detail in their article “How to Start a Pet Bakery.”

2) Know What to Make

Some ingredients are harmful to animals and should not be consumed. While it is primarily up to the owner to feed their animals responsibly, it is also up to any pet bakery to make food responsibly. Ingredients to avoid using include:

  • Xylitol
  • Avocados
  • Alcohol
  • Caffeine
  • Grapes and Raisins
  • Nuts such as Macadamia Nuts, Walnuts, and Pecans
  • Chocolate
  • Some Fruits such as Lemons, Limes, Peaches, Persimmons, and Plums
  • Raw Eggs
  • Yeast Dough
  • Onions and Garlic
  • Nutmeg

These ingredients are extremely harmful and can potentially kill dogs.

Ingredients dogs can eat in moderation are:

  • Salt
  • Sugar and Honey
  • Dairy Products
    • Milk
    • Cheese
    • Cottage Cheese
  • Nuts Such as Cashews, Almonds, and Peanuts
  • Tomatoes
  • Cinnamon
  • Peanut Butter

These human food items are good for dogs, however, too much can cause digestive problems.

Ingredients that are healthy for dogs include:

  • Carrots
  • Celery
  • Corn
  • Broccoli
  • Green Peas
  • Mushrooms
  • Cooked Potatoes and Sweet Potatoes
  • All meats
  • Apples
  • Bananas
  • Blackberries
  • Blueberries
  • Coconut
  • Mangos
  • Oranges
  • Pineapple
  • Strawberries
  • Watermelon
  • Oatmeal
  • Rice

These items are ideal ingredients dogs can eat in abundance and do not require limits. Your pet bakery could market the use of these ingredients as they create healthy and nutritious treats for pets.

For the reasons why some human foods are harmful and how these ingredients can benefit animals, read Healthline’s article “Can My Dog Eat This? A List of Human Foods Dogs Can and Can’t Eat.”

While the FDA does not have any official requirements for pet food, they have strict guidelines for vitamins and food coloring in animal products. Therefore, if your bakery decides to sell supplements or products using food coloring, FDA pre-approval could be required based on the ingredients you use.

Information about approved food additives is listed on the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Title sections 570, 571, and 573. 571 is a list of petitions still active. Currently approved food colorings are listed in 21 CFR parts 73, 74, and 81 and approved preservatives are listed within Part 573 (FDA, 2021).
