With temperatures rising, your walk-in cooler or walk-in freezer will be working harder to keep itself cold. Therefore, it is especially important to keep up with proper cleaning and maintenance techniques to prevent mid-summer breakdowns and to extend the life of your unit.

Cleaning Your Walk-In Cooler or Walk-In Freezer

Clean the interior and exterior with warm soapy water. Keep it simple. Other cleaners might damage the finish.

Wipe down the door gaskets with soap and water. This will prevent bacteria growth or mold growth.

Sweep and mop the interior floors. Immediately wipe up any spills that could freeze over and become a safety hazard.

Clean out the condenser. Use a stiff bristle brush and vacuum. Do this every 3 months. Always disconnect the main power supply before cleaning.

Check for clogged drain lines. Do this yearly with a service technician.

Maintaining Your Walk-In Cooler or Walk-In Freezer

Adjust the sweep gasket as needed. After a lot of normal wear, the sweep gasket might be worn to a point that allows air infiltration. Simply loosen the screw and lower the gasket just enough so the lower lip brushes the threshold or building floor while the door is in the closed position.

Examine the door closer monthly. Check the relationship of the hook and roller to each other. Make adjustments as the user manual dictates. Do not adjust the roller by bending the hook. Additionally, the roller must be horizontal while the door is opened. If the roller is vertical while the door is opened, manually adjust it before the door is closed.

Check the thermometer sensing bulb for optimum accuracy. The bulb cannot be blocked or near any interior lights or heat producing devices. Make sure it is exposed to air.

Inspect for damaged gaskets every 6 months. A damaged gasket could prevent the magnet from sealing. Replace the door gaskets every 3 years.

Watch for condensation forming around the door opening. If your unit is equipped with an anti-condensate heater, this could indicate a failure in the system.
